Ready to go back to school? CSI is offering you the opportunity to head back to the classroom and become a mentor for the day. The lessons learned in one day can last a lifetime!

Our agreement with Junior Achievement Canada (JA) will provide FCSI members with great benefits:

  • Become a leader in the local community
  • Help to build brand awareness of the FCSI designation and yourself
  • Inspire children to realize the importance of education and understanding finance.
  • CSI will be providing, at no cost to you, FCSI branded items to hand out to students.

Why Junior Achievement?

When CSI wanted to find a constructive way to help young people understand business and economics, we found that the Junior Achievement (JA) Program was the best way to get involved.

Hundreds of elementary students will benefit from this agreement and in conjunction with FCSI members, will help students understand the importance of setting goals, effective planning and making wise choices.

All Junior Achievement programs are taught by business volunteers who are recruited from supporting organizations, such as CSI and are fully trained before they begin the program.

The Benefits of Volunteering:

  • Provide a real-life learning experience
  • Become a positive role model for our youth
  • Enjoy practicing and applying new skills
  • Motivate and mentor today’s youth
  • Network with members of the business and education communities
  • Influence the young people that will become our future workforce
  • Contribute something real and of value to your community
  • Teach a program that utilizes your skills and aptitudes
  • Receive professional training to ensure your success in delivering a JA program
  • Return to work inspired by our youth!

How do the Junior Achievement Programs work?

The Programs begin at primary school level and continue through to secondary school, right up to age 18. They help prepare young people for the world by:

  • Showing how individuals, businesses and communities contribute to our economy
  • Discussing the economic benefits of an education
  • Giving valuable advice about careers and financial management

Pick your geographic region

On the application form, you choose the geographic region (city) where you would like to volunteer, preferred delivery date and JA will do its best to meet your requirements.

From training to delivery

Junior Achievement provides all of the training and materials necessary to make your day in the classroom a great success. Here’s how it works:

  • You attend a 2 hour training session before you enter the classroom
  • You and a teaching partner (if you choose a partner, you can deliver by yourself) enter a local classroom to share your experiences and deliver the JA program together. (Full day in the classroom, approx. 9am-3pm)
  • The teacher remains in the classroom at all times to observe the program.

How can FCSI’s participate?

There are various one day programs to choose from including including Dollars with Sense and the Economics for Success Program.

These one day programs are designed to help Grade 7-8 students understand the importance of setting goals, effective planning and making wise choices.

Through these Junior Achievement programs, different skills will be taught to students and are complemented by volunteer information. Volunteers will spend one day (six hours) working with a classroom of students. The Teacher is always in the room with the volunteer.

In a world faced with economic crisis the JA mission is more critical than ever. And in its 40 years of program delivery they have learned that getting kids engaged early on is one of the major contributing factors in their continued success.

JA manages the entire application process and after you have signed up, they will contact you directly. You can be registered in 5-10 minutes.

Your next steps:

Step 1- How do the programs work?

Read the position descriptions for Dollars with Sense and Economics for Success Program. These documents outline the time commitment, training, and how the program works.

For a detailed volunteer description, read the JA Volunteer Handbook.

Step 2- How to Volunteer?

If you are located in Central Ontario (Toronto, Hamilton, York, Halton & Peel Regions and Simcoe County) fill out the On-line Application Form.

For FCSI's in the rest of the country please visit the JA Canada website and find a charter near you to register: http://www.jacan.org/contactus.cfm (Remember to indicate CSI when signing-up).

It takes just a few minutes and will help to make your experience in the classroom a success.
